Other volunteer opportunties include:

·  1310 Weatherford Hwy is the main office for Mission Granbury. They need 2-4 volunteers each day to answer phones and file papers. Their hours are Monday - Thursday 9am - 4pm
·  ·  Rancho Brazos is a 50 foot trailer affectionately called "The Watering Hole". This site has water, shade and a place to rest for those working in the Rancho Brazos area. They need 2-4 people each day to hand out water and be a pleasant person to comfort those working. Their hours are Monday - Sunday 9am - 5pm
·  ·  Fairgrounds Mission Granbury has an area where those affected can get furniture, appliances and other large pieces. This is open for victims on Monday and Wednesday and there is much work to do (sorting, organizing, etc.). They need 20+ people each day to sort, organize, and prepare. Their hours for working are Monday - Saturday 9am - 4pm

You may call Terri Rice (817.279.2061) to know where you could be most used at any particular time.

Other points:
July 13 (Saturday) OSLC will send 15-20 volunteers to the Fairgrounds all day and 2 volunteers to the Watering Hole for the morning. Please email me (btownsend.lakegranbury@gmail.com) if you can volunteer July 13.

Mission Granbury is trying to match every tornado-affected family with an advocate. They will also receive a voucher to pick up items at the fairgrounds. If you know of any victims who have NOT contacted Mission Granbury, please urge them to do so.

As always, if you have any questions or comments about the tornado relief/recovery efforts, please feel free to call (817.559.0435) or email (btownsend.lakegranbury@gmail.com)

Tornado Relief Effort in Granbury, Texas

The following was sent to numerous recipients from Rev. John Austin, Pastor at Our Savior, Granbury, Texas.  Needs and Volunteer contacts and options are listed below.

To so many who have offered to help in Granbury,

First, thank you all so much for your prayers, your concern and your offers to help in the relief effort following the May 15th tornadoes in Granbury. The community, the local churches and non-profits are working hard to minimize the distress to those affected by these storms and to help them in their rebuilding efforts.

Second, please accept my apology for sending this information in a “Distribution List” manner. You have all been so gracious and I wanted to update you in the quickest way possible.

The following is an email from one of our members, Barbara Townsend, who has been working closely with the “Volunteers” committee formed by Lake Granbury Ministerial Alliance in response to our local disaster.

The Ministerial Alliance met today (5/30) to discuss what volunteer opportunities are available to help those affected by the recent tornadoes in Granbury. Here is a list:

Mission Granbury has the following needs:
  • At 3611 East Plaza (behind Grumps) is a receiving building for food, clothing, etc. They need 6-12 people each day to sort and organize these items. Their hours are Monday - Saturday 8am - 3pm
  • At 1310 Weatherford Hwy is the main office for Mission Granbury. They need 2-4 each day to answer phones. Their hours are Monday - Thursday 9am - 4pm
  • At Rancho Brazos is a 50 foot trailer affectionately called "The Watering Hole". This site has water, shade and a place to rest for those working in the Rancho Brazos area. They need 2-4 people each day to hand out water and be a pleasant person to comfort those working. Their hours are Monday - Sunday 9am - 5pm
  • At the fairgrounds Mission Granbury is preparing to open an area where those affected can get furniture, appliances and other large pieces. This will open next Wednesday (6/5) and there is much work to do to prepare (sorting, organizing, etc.). They need 20+ people each day to sort, organize, and prepare. Their hours for working are Monday - Saturday 9am - 4pm
Any of these jobs from Mission Granbury would be appropriate for youth groups as well as adults. You can work a half day shift or full day. If you would like to know where the need is greatest, call Terry Rice (Mission Granbury volunteer coordinator) at 817 279-2061. She can direct you to the greatest need on any particular day.

For volunteering on site:
There are two groups leading this effort
  • Habitat for Humanity is working with the 61 homes in Rancho Brazos that were built by Habitat. They are cleaning the properties and assigning advocates for each homeowner to help them through the rebuilding process. They work on Wednesday and Saturday. If you would like to work with them, go to the ranch across the street from Rancho Brazos at 8:30am and they will assign you a job.
  • Stonewater Church has been canvassing the area and has a list of work orders for non-Habitat for Humanity homes in Rancho Brazos, DeCordova Ranch and Indian Harbor. They are cleaning the properties and will begin repairs in the next week or two. They work on Friday and Saturday. If you would like to work with them, go to Stonewater Church at 7:30am  and they will assign you a job. If you arrive after 7:30am, there will be someone at the church to tell you the opportunities for the day.
Note that this means that currently there are no groups working on site on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday. The Alliance decided that this would best serve the needs of the property owners by allowing the Alliance time to assess needs on a continuing basis and give the property owners some "space" to emotionally adjust to all the tornadoes have wrought.

Clean up should be completed in the next 2-4 weeks and then the work on site will be more appropriate for those who have specific skills at repair such as roofing, electrical, plumbing, sheet rock, etc. The needs will be changing constantly and remember that our "job" is to assist the property owner not find work for ourselves or our church members. We need to be sensitive to their needs on their time table. If you have any questions as to where you can best be used, call Terry Rice ( 817 279-2061)

Concerning groups from outside Granbury who would like to come and help. Thank you! Your generosity of time and talent is much appreciated. We have been overwhelmed with the outpouring of support we have received throughout Texas, Alabama, and Louisiana. Our most critical needs at this point are with the Mission Granbury sites. If you have specific skills that can be used in home repair, call Terry and she can tell you when you can be most useful. But honestly, our brothers and sisters in West, Texas and Moore, Oklahoma are in much greater need than we are. Given the choice, help them as God's hands and feet but we would cherish your prayers.

I hope this helps. Please feel free to call me if I can answer any questions.

Again, thank you so much!
Pray that we use this opportunity to share the Love of Christ in a way that brings glory to His Name.

Oklahoma Tornado Disaster Response

"Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers." (Galatians 6:10)

The Moore Tornado Disaster has affected over 13,000 residents. Nine LCMS members houses have been destroyed, and hundreds of members of two of our sister congregations (i.e., St. John’s Lutheran, Moore, OK and Trinity, Norman, OK) have been touched by the devastation.

All levels of LCMS church structure (i.e., Synod, districts, auxiliaries, et al.) have thrown themselves into a response to the tornado disaster. And all those on the scene ministering to the hurting are very grateful for the God-given, heartfelt response.

Disaster Response for the Body

St. John’s Lutheran Church, Moore, OK working with the Oklahoma District has opened up its summer school ministry to grant tuition-free education to thirty families directly affected by the disaster.

In the wake of the disaster, LCMS members from St. John’s Lutheran, area congregations, Synod, Peace Officer Ministries, Lutheran Church Charities , et al., have been making walk-arounds in devastated neighborhoods documenting needs for follow-up ministry (i.e., clean up, etc.), soliciting prayer requests, and handing out gift cards. Information developed by this effort is providing vision and direction for area congregations in their efforts to coordinate in bringing manpower and resources to bear.

The congregation has positioned itself as a community relief-and-recovery aid station and depot for the reception and distribution of needed items. If you would like to help with specific items of need please refer to the attachment, or visit either St. John’s website (stjohnsmoore.com) or the Oklahoma District website (okdistlcms.ctsmemberconnect.net).

Mrs. Karen Karner, is serving as congregational Disaster Relief Coordinator, and she can be reached at: St. John’s Lutheran Church, 1032 NW 12th St, Moore, OK 73160-1604; stjlc@sbcglobal.net or candkkarner@gmail.com; 405-414-0191 (cell); 405-794-5462 (church).

If you wish to offer volunteer assistance, please go to the following link and provide the appropriate information.

After completing this step you will be contacted shortly.

Still, the best form of help and aid remains financial. Donations can be sent to the “Oklahoma District Disaster Response—LCMS, Attn.: Brent England, P O Box 70, Owasso, OK, 74055” or visiting the Oklahoma District website and hitting the “Give Now” button.

Word from West

West, Texas Recovery & Pastor Canion

The following was sent out by Rev. Matthew Canion.  Please note the call for volunteer assistance as they enter the next phase of recovery.

5/20/13
Dear Christ followers,
As West prepares to take the next step in the recovery process we also pause to our prayers for those affected by the storms from here to Oklahoma City.  We ask that God would continue to be glorified even in the midst of tragedy.
In an effort to keep everyone informed I will try to keep as many people updated as possible concerning recovery efforts in West.  Some of the state and national government agencies have moved their personnel to storm ravaged lands north of here.  From the Lutheran side of things I will be joined by members of Immanuel, Temple this Saturday morning to begin some light lawn care around the town.  Pastor Phil, the associate from First Baptist Church of West, is working with me personally to indentify local people who might benefit from some lawn care.  Additional help will come from the Long Term Recovery will also lend help in identification.  We hope to bring a peaceful presence to the area to lend the idea that there are people willing to help out down the road.
Looking to the future June 15-June 23 is “Loving West” week.  The Southern Baptists are asking us to partner with them in their clean-up of people’s personal property.  Next Tuesday demolition crews will start on many of the homes, we have been asked to help out when the material has been removed from each property.  This means that we will need lawn mowers, weed eaters, rakes, etc. to get the properties closer to the point where owners can think about rebuilding.  If you would like to make it a weekend trip arrangements can be made if we know ahead of time.  Workers will need to wear heavy shoes, long sleeves, and gloves (dust masks are recommended).
Feel free to contact me directly if you would like more information.  254-644-9664

Blessings,
Pastor Matthew Canion

Word from Rev. Ronald Simpson

Email from Rev. Ronald Simpson, Oklahoma District Disaster Relief Coordinator

"Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers." (Galatians 6:10)

The Moore tornado disaster response effort is still in the “rescue” phase with first responders. Authorities continue to advise all to keep clear of the disaster area until their work is completed. Natural gas (residential) lines are broken, causing difficulty in breathing throughout the area – and other utilities are down.  Soon disaster response will move into the relief and recovery phases. See graphic below.

In keeping with the above Scripture, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Moore, Oklahoma (1032 NW 12th, 73160, 405-794-5462, stjlc@sbcglobal.net, Rev. Mark Bersche, sj.pastor@sbcglobal.net) has completed a check with membership to determine need and is responding accordingly. The situation with membership seems to be stabilizing.

The congregation wishes to thank everyone who has contacted them, or has attempted to contact them, with offers of assistance to the membership and the community for their offers.

Congregational leadership is meeting to organize for community outreach and relief once disaster response moves into the relief-and-recovery phases. If you have material relief (water, blankets, clothing, et al., area agencies (e.g., Red Cross) have relief stations set up on site for distribution – please contact them regarding distribution. For longer term material relief, congregational leadership will shortly have a plan to accommodate those who can help. If you have communicated offering assistance, or wish to offer assistance (to aid the leadership in their formulating of a plan) would you be so helpful as to again offer how you can help, when you can help, and what the congregation should do to help you help? [The congregation wants to focus its limited efforts, facilities, and resources on community needs rather than relief-and-recovery worker needs.]

The best form of aid, at this juncture, would be financial. The congregation is planning on purchasing gift cards, as walk-around aid, to give out to residents as they cope with the disaster. Donations can be sent to either “Oklahoma District Disaster Response—LCMS, Attn.: Brent England, P O Box 70, Owasso, OK, 74055” or to “The Lutheran ChurchMissouri Synod (with a memo line or note designating “LCMS Disaster Response”), P.O. Box 66861, St. Louis, MO 63166-6861.”

Please continue offering prayers on behalf of survivors, and that the Lord would help us give a good Gospel witness.

Every Blessing in Christ be yours,

Granbury, Texas

The Granbury Tornado Recovery is underway.  Rev. John Austin, pastor of Our Savior, Granbury, and his congregation, are working in the neighborhoods that were destroyed.  Long term efforts are now underway.  If you are able to assist in this effort, contact Pastor Austin at the church office phone number (817) 573-5011 or email Pastor Austin at oslc1000@sbcglobal.net.

Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City has a long recovery process ahead.  Reports are coming in about the situation.  Things are still fluid at this time.  The following is what I have so far:

As of Monday evening (May 20, 2013), the Oklahoma District President, Rev. Barrie Henke, who lives just north of Oklahoma City, wrote the following:
Sunday in Edmond – received minor damage since the cloud formed over Holy Trinity then moved eastward before touching down.  This is the same storm that went through Luther, Wellston, and Carney.  No word from the Wellston folk as to damage.
Sunday in Shawnee – This is the storm that pushed through Norman then hit Shawnee and surrounding area.  I talked with Rev. Lewis Walters yesterday and he said the tornado missed the church.  He had no new report on any damage sustained to his members.  The report did show extensive damage in a mobile home park and other areas.
Monday in Moore – as of this afternoon (Monday @ 5 PM) Rev. Mark Bersche reported that his daughter was in one of the schools leveled, but she is safe.  He has been unable to assess damage since he is virtually trapped in his home because of debris filled streets.  He believed that the church was OK since it seemed to hit south of the church @ 12th & Santa Fe, however the tornado skimmed past their residential street.  He has no phone service at this point but is able to get through an occasional text message.  With schools, businesses and homes devastated, I am sure that some members of St. John’s have been affected by this powerful tornado!
What can we do?  Pray for the well-being and comfort of those who are victims of the storm.  Wait patiently until there is an assessment of the damage and the need.  The LCMS Disaster Relief is waiting to put “boots on the ground” when a proper assessment is made.  Various other districts have contacted me about “chainsaw” crews.
______________________________________________________
When asked, "What can we do?" the response depends upon the situation.
Pastor Canion is now looking for volunteers for some specific work.
Pastor Austin is gather a list of volunteer resources for long term recovery.
President Henke is asking for your prayers and they are setting up volunteer teams for work yet to be determined. The website for contact information is http://holytrinityedmond.org/
Prayers for each of these incidents, for those recovering and for those serving are greatly welcomed!

Financial donations are alway appreciated by the people recovering and by the people serving in disaster relief situations.   There are "gaps" of income that need to be addressed.  Bills to be paid, food and clothing to be purchased, and deductibles to be paid.  While there are many agency through which you may donate, the Texas District works first with congregations and members, then moves into communities through local pastors and congregations.  100% of the dollars given are applied to the disaster relief effort.
You may donate to any one or all of the recovery efforts as you choose by clicking here.
Thank you for your prayers and for your donation!
